| Activity | George Gordon, 9th Marquess of Huntly (1761-1853) spent the majority of his life as an officer in the army, and though some of his postings were likely honorary his promotions and position as Aide-de-Camp to two monarchs suggest that he likely had some form of military experience. His commissions included fifteen years as the colonel in chief of the famous 42nd Highlanders, better known as the Black Watch. Outside of his time in the military, he sat in the House of Lords for the majority of his life, even being created a Baron specifically for the purpose of giving him a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. His marriage expanded the family lands and he further augmented these estates through the purchase of additional manors in Huntingdonshire. He seems to have cared about the state of his estates as he spent a significant amount of money remodelling Orton Hall. |
