ActivityJohn Tharp's (1796-1883) life took a different course than his grandfather had expected when he named him as heir to his vast sugar empire. Had the older man lived a few years longer it may have become apparent that his grandson's mental difficulties made him unsuited to inheriting such property. However as things stood, it seems clear that throughout his childhood and teenage years he was viewed by almost all who knew him as a pawn to be manipulated in the hopes of acquiring great wealth. His tutor's daughters supposedly had designs on marrying him in order to gain control of a fortune, his uncle seems to have actively wished for him to die young and when he was married - a situation he does not seem to have understood - his wife also clearly wanted to keep him in her power to allow her to help herself to his wealth. His life before being placed in Much Hadham clearly was not a happy one, and as Lord Eldon remarked what would have benefitted him years earlier was a nurse, not a wife. His long life in Much Hadham appears to have been passed in leisure, under significantly less pressure than the outside world presented, and he seems to have been happy.
