Person NameTharp; John (1769-1851); of Chippenham Park
SurnameTharp
ForenamesJohn
Epithetof Chippenham Park
ActivityUnlike the previous generations of his family, or his brothers, John Tharp (1769-1851) spent his adult life in England and does not appear to have taken much interest in the details of sugar plantations beyond wanting to make as much profit from them as possible. Though he served for several years in the Horse Guards, he clearly did not think this was a long-term vocation for him and when he was contemplating leaving the military his main concern appears to have been ensuring that his father increased his allowance in order to offset the loss of income. In his youth, he and his wife seem to have lived the life of wealthy socialites, often to the despair of John's father. One such occurrence was when John purchased a number of bottles of wine from the departing French Ambassador in 1803 at what he considered an excellent price, but his father deemed an unnecessary expense. He was openly dismissive of the idea that his mentally-challenged nephew would inherit the wealth he saw as his, and demanded that he be granted the family's English estates. When he saw his opportunity to become the de facto owner of the Tharp lands he persevered in court for several years to get his way and seems to have been ready to return to court at any time to further press his grievances against the family's creditors. Despite evidently not having the same interest in the sugar business as had his father, he evidently spent much of his life managing the family estates as they declined.
