Person NameTharp; John (1744-1804); of Chippenham Park and Jamaica
SurnameTharp
ForenamesJohn
Epithetof Chippenham Park and Jamaica
ActivityJohn Tharp (1744-1804) vastly expanded his family's sugar business through the purchase of extensive new plantations in a swiftly developing area of Jamaica, and by continually developing his properties through the re-investment of profits. His business empire was based on the exploitation of slave labour and an indication of the size of his sugar empire is given by the 2,800 slaves which worked his land by the end of his life. He used some of his profits to purchase estates in England, and it is possible that he was draw to the property of Chippenham Park because of the work which would need to go into developing the land. He spent time in public office in Jamaica, but clearly did not feel comfortable being employed far from his properties, and so mostly held local roles. The vast majority of his time continued to be taken up by his business interests and clearly this was his passion as so many of his competitors were content with what they had whereas Tharp was constantly driven to acquire and develop more.
