TitleProclamation of the accession of the new King on Huntingdon and Godmanchester Bridge.
DescriptionThe proclamation of a new king or queen's reign by the Borough of Godmanchester traditionally took place on the middle of the river bridge between Huntingdon and Godmanchester. Here we can see the Mayor of Godmanchester, alderman James, riding back across the bridge after making the proclamation on either the accession of King Edward VIII in January 1936, or of his brother King George VI in December 1936. Compare with WH3/2400A-C, which are images of the Godmanchester Mayor Aubrey Markham proclaiming the accession of King George V in 1910.
The photograph is taken from Godmanchester side of the river, and provides a good view of the buildings on the Huntingdon side, including the bacon factory along the riverside.
