TitleGaol picture of Louisa Dickerson.
DescriptionThe Habitual Criminals Act of 1869 required a register with an accompanying photograph to be kept of all criminals held in gaols (Habitual Criminal Returns registers). Arthur Maddison was employed to photograph the prisoners in Huntingdon Gaol, and a few glass plates have survived in the WH9 series. Here we have an image of a Louisa Dickerson. The original glass plate has two images of the prisoner, with the identifying no. 238 and Louisa Dickerson 1877 April 30th written on the plate

Louisa Dickerson was aged 19 on discharge from prison, was 4 feet 11 inches tall, had dark brown hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion. She had been born in Stilton, was single and a servant. She was lame on the right side, had a large cut on the inside of the thumb on her right hand, a cut on her left-hand thumb near the first joint, a large mole on the thick part of her left arm above the elbow, a cut on the bridge of her nose, and a cut on her left eyebrow near the nose. She was apprehended at Stilton and convicted at Huntingdonshire Quarter Sessions on the 1 January 1877 for stealing a watch valued at £3. She was sentenced to four months hard labour and due to be released on the 30 April 1877 and to return to Stilton. She had a previous conviction for stealing four printed books and one gold pencil case at Wisbeach on the 17 February 1876, for which she was sentenced to 14 days

Huntingdonshire Archives hold two Habitual Criminal Returns registers 1870-1878 (Reference 4440/367/89). All the images in the first register have been digitised and can be viewed on our CALM catalogue.
