TitleHorse and Cart on the Frozen River at St Ives
DescriptionView of a horse and cart and a large crowd of townspeople standing on the frozen River Great Ouse at St Ives. The winters of 1890-1891 and 1894 were very severe, and the river froze to such a thickness that even a horse and cart could be driven on to the river. The driver is reputed to be Alfred Worts, the proprietor of the Dolphin Hotel. The bridge with the three-storeyed chapel can be seen in the background. This glass plate is not dated, therefore this image could have been taken in either winter. See also DC70
