TitleMr J. Windover's Carriage
DescriptionA two-horse, four wheeled gig outside "The Grove", Godmanchester. A lady and gentleman with their dog are sitting in the gig and a groom is standing by the horses. A John Charles Windover, aged 28, is listed in the 1881 census as living in Huntingdon with his parents, Charles Sanford and Jane Windover. By 1898 he is listed in Kelly's Trade Directory as living in Godmanchester. This image is virtually identical to WH3/1928.
Windover's Carriage Works was situated in Brampton Road, Huntingdon and was founded in 1857 by George Sandford. The factory originally built horse-drawn vehicles and later moved with the times and built luxury cars, including Rolls Royces. Charles S. Windover joined the business in the later nineteenth century and the company then changed its name to C.S . Windover & Co. Ltd.
