TitleThe Archdeaconry Library, Huntingdon
DescriptionThe Archdeaconry Library situated on the Walks East, Huntingdon. Three children are standing in the foreground. The Library was built in 1890 at the expense of Archdeacon Veasey. It is Elizabethan in style, of red brick with timber framing. See also WH1/169a-b, which are identical images of St Mary's Mother's Group meeting in the Library in 1893. The board behind them reads "This building was erected at the sole cost of the Venerable F. Gerald Vesey, L.L.D., Archdeacon of Huntingdon and generously presented by him to the Vicar and Churchwardens of St Mary's with St. Benedict's for the purposes of a parish room subject to the conditions named in the trust deed of November 13th 1890. Trustees Miles Atkinson, Vicar, [?] Cooper, Churchwarden." [rest unreadable]. The Reverend Miles Atkinson was Vicar of the parish 1881-1894
The Archdeaconry Library was founded c1716 by William Wake D.D., Bishop of Lincoln, and consisted of about one thousand books for the use of the Clergy of Huntingdonshire. It was originally housed in Buckden Palace.
