DescriptionTitle. Great Eastern Railway, March and Spalding Line. Description. Construction of a railway line to leave the Great Eastern Railway in the parish of Doddington, (March) and terminating by a junction with the Great Northern Railway near the GNR junction with the Norwich and Spalding railway. NB. This scheme was rejected by Parliament in favour of a GNR scheme (see page 48 of the Great Eastern Railway by Cecil J. Allen). Passing through the following parishes: Doddington, Whittlesey, Thorney (all in the Isle of Ely, county Cambridgeshire). Crowland, Deeping St Nicholas, Spalding, Pinchbeck, (all in Holland, county Lincolnshire). Comprising: Plans and sections: Horizontal 5 chains (110 yards) to 1 inch. Vertical 100 feet to 1 inch. Cross sections: Horizontal 5 chains (110 yards) to 1 inch. Vertical 40 feet to 1 inch. Surveyor Charles R Cheffins. Engineers John Hawkshaw, George Robert Stephenson, Robert Sinclair. Acting Engineer, John H. Stanton. NB. This scheme rejected by the House of Commons in favour of Great Northern proposals.
