TitleThe Frozen River Great Ouse at St Ives, looking east
DescriptionView of a horse and cart and a large crowd of townspeople standing on the frozen River Great Ouse at St Ives. The winters of 1890-1891 and 1894 were very severe, and the river froze to such a thickness that even a horse and cart could be driven on to the river. The driver is reputed to be Alfred Worts, the proprietor of the Dolphin Hotel. The bridge with the three-storeyed chapel can be seen in the background. The original glass plate (WH2/31) is not dated, therefore this image could have been taken in either winter. Ernest Whitney has written on this print "The great frost River Ouse at St Ives approx 1887".
This image is the same as WH2/31.
