TitleMr Day presenting the mace to St Ives Borough Council.
DescriptionThe St Ives Borough minute book no. 18 (Oct 1952-Nov 1954) records that on the 13 August 1953 the Town Clerk, Mr George Lewis Day, reported that as his great grandfather was instrumental in securing St Ives Borough its Charter, and that members of his family had continuously served as Town Clerk, he would like to provide a Town Mace at his own expense. There are various entries in the minute book recording, for example, the design of the mace (the Clerk produced a sketch of the mace on the 12 November 1953, showing that he had managed to have the town bridge reproduced on it) and the provision of a uniform for the Mace Bearer Mr EJ Stocker ( salary of £5.5s.0d p.a) on the 14 January 1954.

The presentation ceremony took place on the 21 April 1954 (the Queen's Birthday) in the Corn Exchange. Those present were the Mayor, Alderman D Bryant J.P., Aldermen Warren, Stiles and Holmes, Mr Councillors Robb, Radford, TH Burgess, Kiddle, GW Burgess, Ilott, Turner, Cuttress, Ruston and Westrope, and Mrs Councillor Main. Mrs Councillor Hudson was absent.
