TitleThe Sebastopol cannon, Huntingdon
DescriptionA close up view of the Sebastopol cannon, Brampton Road, Huntingdon. Part of the Chivers Factory and the almshouses can be seen in the background
This cannon from the Battle of Sebastopol was erected in memory of the Crimean War. The Hunts Post of the 11th July 1940 reports on the removal of the cannon - "The old cannon on Mill Common, Huntingdon, which was given to the town by the Earl of Sandwich, being removed, following the Town Council's decision to sell if for scrap metal. Lord Sandwich agreed with the Council that the gun could best serve its country by being turned into something more up-to-date". The plinth remained empty for many years, but a fibreglass replica now stands in its place.
