TitleBackhouse, William, Fellow of Christ's College and Vicar of Meldreth 'A Sermon Preached at the Visitation of the Archdeacon of Ely in the Church of St. Michael, Cambridge, on Thursday, May 19, 1763'
DescriptionA 19-page pamphlet sub-titled 'The History of the Man of God, who was sent from Judah to Bethel; a Caution against Religious Delusion'. The delusion in question is evidently Methodism, which affected Backhouse closely, as it was at Meldreth where he was vicar that Wesley had in 1759 preached to a crowd numbering, according to his 'Journal', some four thousand. The living of Meldreth was in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Ely and it is not improbable that Backhouse's views on Methodism had favoured his appointment to Meldreth only shortly before. This was the first living of a successful career which he continued from 1769 as rector of St. Mary- le-Bow and archdeacon of Canterbury, before moving to a succession of Kentish churches. [
The pamphlet was found in a hedge on the Horningsea Road near Fen Ditton in 1975 and presented to the Church by Mr. K.D. Sholl of Cherry Hinton.]
