TitleWRAY'S CHARITY. Copy and Probate, 2 May 1590, of the will of James Godfrey
DescriptionHe leaves two tenements to his wife Alice for her lifetime and after to the children of his daughters Alice and Katherine for two years and then to his son James and his heir. Leaves to his wife Alice for her life a tenement in Cordwayner Row, (now Market Street). After her death this tenement to be sold to pay debts, the remainder to go to Alice his daughter and her children. He leaves his dwelling to his son e James and his heirs. His wife is to keep the three tenements left to her in repair and if she does not they will pass into the hands of John Norcott and Thomas Ventris. He leaves his tools and house fixtures to his son James and his furnishings and household effects to his wife. He leaves property in Horningsey and Earith to his son whom he also desires to enter into a bond for 200 marks that he will not sell or divide up the properties. He also requires an annual inspection of the property by his survivors, the executors to pay them 15d a year. Residue of his goods to go to his son who is to act as executor. Supervisors to be John Northcoat and Thomas Ventris. Witnesses John Northcoat, notary public and his servant James Watton. Addition that if his son dies within eight years of the date of the will, Gilbert Rogers to be his executor. His wife Alice to have six silver spoons, a silver pot and goblet. Witnesses James Watton and John Hutton.
