TitleCorrespondence concerning the rebuilding of St. Cyriac's Church
Description(See also P150/5/2 Vestry Minutes and Churchwarden's Accounts 1805 - 1816).
After the Steeple of St. Mary's Church had been struck by lightning in 1800, proposals were made for the demolition of both churches and the reuse of the materials in the erection of a new church against the tower of St. Cyriac's. Advertisements resulted in the submission of estimates of cost from various builders, including J.S. Winter on previously engaged on repairs to Ely Cathedral, J. Gardiner, Carpenter, of Newmarket, and Charles Humphrey (to rebuild the tower only).
Other items include:
Articles of Agreement made with Richard Kent of Newmarket, bricklayer for the repair of the steeple of St. Mary's at a cost of £82.5s.6d;
A letter from the Revd. George Jenyns to J.P. Allix of Swaffham Prior House recommending Mr. Byfield and Mr. Brown, at that time engaged on supervising the building of the County Gaol at Cambridge (at a cost of £12,380) as suitable builders to undertake the work (on the back of this letter are faint pencil sketches, possibly designs for the rebuilt church);
Particulars of the conditions to be observed by the contractors, including the reuse of materials from St. Mary's and the substitution of slate for lead as a roof covering (includes a plan of the intended roof structure);
Letters to the Bishop of Ely and his reply advising the rebuilding of St. Cyriac's (A Faculty was granted for this purpose 12th September 1805, and although he had been much opposed to the plan, J.P. Allix Esq. laid the foundation stone of the new Church of St. Cyriac on 28th May 1806 - Cambridge Chronicle).
