TitleTown Lands Charity. Accounts of the treasurer of the Town Lands
DescriptionConsists of rentals of the town land, given at three or four yearly intervals, payments for fen taxes, charges of constable, overseers of highways and of poor, militia tax, repairs to town property such as the town house and field gates, etc.
Verse on front flyleaf:
Whoe'r thou art that keeps this booke
Let justice by thy aime
Then he wch shall into it looke
Can fix of the noe blame
Let Donors gifts be used right
Accoarding to theire minde
Then certainly both day and night
Thou'lt peace of conscience find

Volume commences with transcript of deed of gift from Henry Pyke of Over, yeoman to 14 feoffees of various pieces of land, given in detail, income from which to go to paying 1/10 and 1/5 taxes, other 'communal burdens', for repair of roads and for constable's rates, etc., dated 27 December 1675.

Extraordinary payments made, e.g.:
1679 surplus money given to Dorothy Kidd, widow, towards building her house, in regard of her poverty and pains in maintaining herself and children without putting the town in charge.
1687 for drum and gunpowder at coronation of King William. 1687 for making up 12 long knives in the 'general scare'.
1691 payment 'at Coxes for joy of reducing Ireland' and for joy at the King's safe return.
