TitleLetter from James Wilson, Curate of Clare near Tandragee, to Viscount Mandeville
DescriptionAppealing for funds to erect a parochial school.

In the letter, Wilson writes to the Viscount on a subject "unprecedented in this country and apalling to the feelings of every bible reading Christian." In 1838 an established Church built a School house in the Townland of .... in Clare, with donations coming from clergy and Lay Members of the Church of England. Rev.W.Bruce, then incumbent, used the School house as a temporary Chapel and supplied it with bibles and other items of divine worship. Wilson then goes on to tell the Viscount that, a short time back, a local man named James Henry applied to Lord Gosford, Proprietor of the Estate, to have the school under the control of the National Board of Education. After being given the key to the school house, James Henry threw the bibles in an adjoining field. As there is there is no Church School, Wilson appeals to church bretheren, noblemen and gentlemen to help raise the sum of £70 to erect a Parochial School house in the Clare district.
