DescriptionThere are letters to and from the 9th Earl of Sandwich, as Chairman of the County Council and owner of Hinchingbrooke House. Part of the house and houses in the park were used to accommodate at various times the Nursery School of the Dockland Settlement, Canning Town, the Sunshine Babies Nursery, some young nurses from London, and some of the classes of the Highbury Hill High School for Girls. There are many letters about these. There are letters about the schooling of evacuees at Kimbolton, Brampton and Stibbington and about nursery schools at Brampton Park and Alconbury House. There are also a few letters about Paxton Park being used as a hospital (July 1940); the blind of Coventry being found accommodation at Fenstanton (Jan 1942), Brampton Park being taken over by the Air Ministry (Feb, 1942); and Elton Hall being used as accommodation for the aged and infirm (March 1942). There are also circulars, reports and minutes about the scheme for providing boots and clothing for evacuated children. There is also one circular about the arrangements made for MP's peers and civil servants should their evacuation from London prove necessary (April, 1940).
