TitleGreat Northern Railway
DescriptionPassing through parishes: Bluntisham cum Earith, Colne, Somersham, Warboys, Ramsey. Not signed by Clerk of the Peace. Covers only 'that part of the Great Northern Railway being in the County of Huntingdon' Engineer: Joseph Gibbs Historical note: although the plans and book of reference are all undated, this is clearly the November 1835 scheme, which is entirely unrelated to the later (post-1845) Great Northern Railway q.v. R.B. Fellows, Railways to Cambridge, p.2 viz. 'In the Parliamentary Sessions of 1836 a Bill was introduced for a line from London to York through Cambridge, surveyed by Joseph Gibbs in the previous year... called the Great Northern Railway'. Scheme rejected by House of Commons (Although the scheme was in outline revived in 1841, the papers here are not from that date, since it was by then named 'The London and York by Cambridge and Lincoln' - cf. HCP/8/3 below) Related material: book of reference and plans & sections for Great Northern Railway London-Cambridge scheme of 1835 at CRO Q/RUm3.
