TitleChaplain's Report
DescriptionThe Chaplain said that 38 persons had been committed in the past year a decrease of 10 on the recent average. 19 could read and write, 13 could read only, 6 could do neither. He gave instruction; prisoners were supplied with religious books and could receive others (duly vetted) from their friends. Improvement in the moral and spiritual condition of the prisoners was less than he desired - A Prison is not a Reformatory...... So long as there exists a giant antagonist out of doors the Chaplain feels that much of his labour will be in vain. The present numbers are thirty-eight - of these twenty-two attribute their imprisonment directly to intoxication.
