TitleCopy of will and codicil of Matthew Smith
Descriptionof Crooms Hill, Greenwich, Kent, a post captain in the Royal Navy. To his sister, Jane Smith, the sum of £200 and all his carriages, horses, linen, china, wines, liquors, guns, watches, clocks, prints, household furniture and all household effects, and for her use during her life, all his books, plate and pictures, and after her death, these latter are to descent with his real estate as heirlooms. To his sister, Margaret Ann Tompson, the sum of £300. To his executors his leasehold messuage at Crooms Hill and all the premises that he holds by a lease from the crown dated 30 June 1803, in trust to permit his sister, Jane Smith, to enjoy the same during her life, and after her death, then in trust to sell the leasehold premises and to apply the purchase monies in the same manner as the residue of his personal estate. To his executors all the residue of his personal estate in trust to convert it all into money and to invest them same and to stand possessed of the stocks, etc, in trust to pay the dividends to his sister, Jane Smith, during her life, and after her death, to dispose of all the stocks, etc as follows: as to one third part in trust to pay a half part to his nephew, Bellingham John Smith, absolutely, and as to the other half part in trust to pay the interest thereof to Bellingham John Smith during his life, and after his death, to pay the same to his widow until her death or remarriage, and then to transfer the half part of the third share to the children of Bellingham John Smith, and in default of issue then to hold the same for the same trusts as the remaining two third parts; as to the remaining two third parts in trust to raise from them the sum of £1,000 to be paid to his niece, Mary Ann Smith, sister of Bellingham John Smith, and then in trust to pay the interest to his sister, Margaret Ann Tompson, and on her death, to transfer the stocks, etc equally to his niece, Mary Ann smith, and all the children of Margaret Ann Tompson. To his nephew, Edward Tompson, and George Smith of Stone Buildings, Lincolns Inn, Middlesex, gentleman, his capital messuage at Lee, Kent, now in the occupation of Sir George Martin, all other his messuages and lands at Lee, his capital messuage called the London Tavern situate in Bishopsgate Street in the City of London in the occupation of Mr Charles Bleadon, his farm and lands at or near Tunbridge, Kent, in the occupation of Mr Francis, and all other his real estate, to the use of his sister, Jane Smith, for her life, and after her death, to the use of his nephew, Bellingham John Smith, for his life and then to the use of B.J. Smith’s sons in tail male, and in default of such issue to the use of all the daughters of B.J. Smith in equal shares and in default of such issue, to the use of his sister, Margaret Ann Tompson, for her life, and then to the use of Edward Tompson and George Smith in trust to sell the real estate and to divide the money so raised equally between his niece, M.A. Smith, and the children of his sister, M.A. Tompson. Appoints his sister, Jane Smith, and his nephew, Edward Tompson, executors of the will. In the codicil, Smith notes that he has agreed to sell a small piece of land at St Neots to Mr Day and that if he were to die before the sale could be completed, he devises this land to his executors upon trust to complete the sale and apply the purchase money in the same manner as he directed concerning his personal wealth.
