TitleHand-written copy of a letter from Thomas Peach, agricultural labourer of Cress House, Brampton, to John Bright, MP for Birmingham, of One Ash, Rochdale, Lancashire
DescriptionWith the letter Peach sends a barley loaf which he had made to demonstrate to his neighbours the hardship of the poor in the days before the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846 (in which Bright had been instrumental). The local Conservatives had recently formed a branch of the Fair Trade League, but Peach believes that his demonstration, which the local Liberals encouraged him to make, has 'strangled' Fair Trade in his village. He asks Bright a couple of questions about the duty on wheat and the opening of the ports in the years before 1846.
