DescriptionThis fine charter, to which is still attached the seal, made Godmanchester a self-governing manor, a rare form of local government. The writing, though over 800 years old, is perfectly legible and the document is in excellent condition. Earlier unspecified privileges are confirmed on condition that the 'MEN OF GUMECESTRE' pay £120 annually to the king - a sum which has continued to be paid to this day. 20 May 14 John.
