TitlePapers of Lord Robert Montagu (1825-1902)
DescriptionLord Robert Montagu was born at Melchbourne [Bedfordshire] on 24 January 1825, the second son of George Montagu 6th Duke of Manchester, and his first wife, Millicent Sparrow. His maternal grandmother was Lady Olivia Bernard Sparrow of Brampton Park. Montagu was raised at the family seat, Kimbolton Castle, but spent a great deal of his younger years on the continent due to his mother's ill health. He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1849.

Montagu was Conservative MP for Huntingdonshire between 1859 and 1874 and for Westmeath in Ireland from 1874 to 1880. He was vice-president of the Committee on Education from March 1867 until the collapse of Disraeli's government in December 1868. He was a member of the Privy Council in 1867.

Montagu became a Roman Catholic in 1870 and was formally expelled from the Conservative Party in 1873. He later returned to the Anglican faith.

Montagu married twice, firstly to Ellen Cromie, daughter of John Cromie, at Portstewart [Ireland] in 1850. They had four children:

- Olivia Millicent Montagu 1850-1928
- John Cromie Montagu 1852-1854
- Ellen Mary Elizabeth Montagu 1853-1951
- Lt.-Cdr. Robert Acheson Cromie Montagu 1854-1931

Lady Ellen Montagu died in 1857 and in 1862 Montagu married Elizabeth Catherine Wade. Elizabeth had apparently been a housemaid prior to the marriage. They had six children:

- Elizabeth Catharine Mary Montagu 1863-1949
- Millicent Montagu 1864-1942
- May Miriam Montagu 1866-1897
- Monthermer Stanley Hume Montagu 1868-1954
- Captain Henry Bernard Montagu 1872-1941
- Major St. John Edward Montagu 1878-1946
