TitleLocal Government Information Service library
DescriptionCambridgeshire County Council ran an information library for its Members and senior offficers, based in Shire Hall (ground floor room 021, the easternmost corner). It was called the Local Government Information Service (LGIS). The earliest library stamps or stickers bearing the LGIS name appear to date from 1990. As well as publications of the post-1974 county council, the LGIS collection inherited many earlier publications and reports that had been created or collected by the county council's predecessor authorities. Included with the LGIS Library was the County Planning Library.

The LGIS library was closed down in 2003/04 and there was a major cull of its holdings. Surviving items were transferred to Cambridgeshire Collection Local Studies Library in 2007 and stored at the Cottenham archive outstore (at that time local studies and archives were a single team). Archives and local studies staff appraised this collection in August 2017, with some material retained for Cambridgeshire Archives (accession C117/032) and other material retained for the Cambridgeshire Collection. The remainder was destroyed as it generally consisted of duplicates of publications already held by Local Studies. It is interesting that a few items in C117/032 were addressed to the County Archivist, which raises the possibility that no great care was taken to differentiate the LGIS library from the County Record Office library when stored at Cottenham.

In addition there were many hundred of boxes at Cottenham labelled 'to be sorted' and which included former LGIS items too, as well as related publications from unknown sources. These were all appraised by archives and local studies staff in August 2017, alongside the C117/032 accession. Items from the 'to be sorted' collection were accessioned later as C118/004.

We have split up the surviving items, on the grounds that LGIS was never an organic archive in its own right but was instead an artificially collected library. Items dated 1974 or later are listed here, in CC7/LGIS. Earlier items are listed within the County Council archive to which they relate; for example, publications collected by LGIS which relate to the 1965-1974 period and which relate to the Cambs and Isle of Ely County Council area will be found in CC5/LGIS. This series combines the two accessions, C117/032 and C118/004; each individual item entry identifies which accession it came in.
