DescriptionThis file consists of newspaper cuttings from various newspapers throughout the Second World War. It includes a full report of the proceedings and work of the Huntingdonshire County Council in October 1939, press hand-outs to the local press, press cuttings from the Daily Telegraph, the Morning Post, the Daily Express, reports of problems over air raid precautions at Godmanchester. Interesting pictures include Surgeon Commander A.S.G. Bell, county ARP officer, from the Peterborough Advertiser dated 19 January 1940, civil defence controllers including the Earl of Sandwich (chairman of the county council) and Mr J.B. Kelly (clerk of the county council) from the Hunts Post dated 22 February 1940, a report of the wedding of Mrs D.M. Carr (first county organiser of the WVS) to the Reverend Canon G.A. Green, then rector of Fletton and later vicar of Hartford, dated 20 June 1941, a picture of Dr C.B. Moss Blundell (county medical officer and the county’s first county medical officer). There is a long report from the Hunts Post of 10 September 1942 on the recruitment of voluntary fire watchers. (After the heavy raids in London, fire watching became an essential part of ARP. The streets were patrolled by fire watchers who were trained to deal with incendiary bombs, particularly in empty shops and buildings, and authorised to break in if they knew fire bombs had dropped. All office buildings where more than ? 30 people worked, or other buildings where a similar number were employed, had to have a fire watching scheme.) There are also reports of the ‘standing down’ of the Home Guard and the ARP services and the victory celebrations.
