TitleGeneral District rate books
DescriptionThe general district rate valuation, originally set by the Urban District Council, on rateable properties and land in the parish of Cambridge was raised to meet expenses of the Public Health Act 1875 including public works, annual loan charges and administration, and deposited into the District Fund Account. Volumes are arranged by parish. Each property is given a consecutive numerical reference, the name of the occupier; the name of the owner; a description of the property; a location or situation of the property; the rateable value as stated in the poor rate; value upon which the general district rate is assessed; and the amount of general district rate. They record twice yearly collections and any irrecoverable amounts. From 1914 following a report drawn up in response to a letter from the Local Government Board, it was recommended that the same individual be employed by the Overseers of the Poor and the Corporation to collect both the General District Rate and the Poor rate half yearly to save on overlapping of work and expense. From 1914 both the poor rate and the general district rate collections are recorded in the same rate book with all entries split between 2 volumes. These volumes were kept by the Overseers of the Poor and so have been catalogued to reflect this. To find details of the General District Rate between 1914-1926 you will need to refer to the records of the Overseers of the Poor at reference CB/6 in this catalogue. Volume one containing the north and centre of the town and volume two containing the south end of town including Romsey Town. From 1920 following the city's boundary change rate books are created for the parish of Cambridge without within Chesterton Union. After Apr 1923 there are four rate books recording the town rate. Vol one contains details of university property and the centre of the town; volume two contains the residential areas by the station including streets off Mill Road, Hills Road and Newmarket Road; volume three contains the residential area to the north of town including Huntingdon Road, Milton Road, Victoria Street to Chesterton, and volume four contains rates for the residential area to the south of the town including Hills Road, Cherry Hinton Road to Fulbrooke Road. The volumes of General District rate books created and held by the Treasurer's department of the Corporation and found in this series are arranged alphabetically first by property owner and then by address.
