TitleLands Tribunal case Kings, Downing, Churchill and Newnham Colleges versus Cambridge City Council
DescriptionKings, Downing, Churchill and Newnham Colleges objected to the 1963 valuation of their property holdings resulting in higher rates to be paid by the colleges. An appeal was lodged by the colleges and the rating authority against the 1963 valuation list but the Local Valuation Court upheld the Inland Revenue assessments. The test cases were then taken to the Lands Tribunal in London. The Lands Tribunal amended the valuation on Churchill College in the Colleges interests but the valuations on Downing, Newnham and Kings were increased from the Local Valuation Court assessment. No party was entirely successful in their case but the decision of the court allowed negotiations of the valuations of the other colleges to proceed. The City Council accepted liability to pay 1/4 towards the legal costs of the colleges and the Valuation Officer. This series comprises statements of agreed facts for the case in the local lands tribunal between each college, the Corporation and John Edward Allsop, Valuation Officer; copies of the 1963 valuation with superseded versions by Hubert Bewlay and WM Hattersley, copies of exhibits relating to the finances of the Colleges, newspapers articles, education circulars, test cases and reports on College stock and investments used in the Local and Lands Tribunal cases, and transcripts of the 16 days of the case.
