TitleGeneral purposes, gas test and fire brigade committee minute books
DescriptionThe General Purposes Committee met approximately once a month and discussed a multitude of issues relating to the governing of the town. They read, and took action on, letters directed to them from members of the public raising issues of individual concern and they heard reports of officers such as the Sanitary Inspector and the visitors to the Lunatic Asylum. Issues discussed ranged from the promotion or action on new legislation, liaising with the University Syndicate when appropriate; applications from tramways and railway companies; alterations to properties or the removal of old buildings; the introduction of public seating; issuing hackney carriage licences; the extension of the Borough boundary; to and the establishment of the NHS. The minutes books of the General Purposes Committee were indexed from 1907. The Fire Brigade Committee met approximately once a month and resolved issues relating to the appointment of officers such as the Captain and Lieutenant, advertising for volunteers, insurance, the ordering and maintenance of apparatus and uniforms, and the paying of bills. The committee heard reports of the Captain into the state of the fire brigade, the system for calling out the fire brigade, reports into specific fires, installation of telephones, new premises for stations and reel houses, the location of hydrants and the supply of fire alarms. The Gas test Committee met monthly and monitored the work of the Gas Company. The heard reports of the gas tester, the gas inspector and the inspector of gas meters. Issues discussed related to the testing of apparatus, the quality of the gas, the size of flames, and the salary of officers.
