DescriptionThe Market Committee met monthly and discussed issues relating to the administration of the markets of the town, in particular the Cattle Market and the General Market. The accounts of the collector of the Corn Exchange, the collector of tolls, and the Inspector of weights and measures were presented at each meeting. Issues discussed and resolved included the maintenance of the Corn Exchange and the market infrastructure such as cattle pens; the appointment of officers; orders for cloth for stalls; summons issued for infringements of bye-laws; recommendations of improvements required to the Market Place; tenders for the erection of the Corn Exchange; the issuing of licences for explosives; hire of the Corn Exchange to third parties; memorials from stallholders regarding conditions, opening hours and holidays; records of the spread of disease at the Cattle market and a record of individual cattle slaughtered as a result; payments due from particular stall holders; alterations to the Cattle market and parking regulations.
