TitleCompensation claim by Edgar Protor against the Corporation for damages under the Riot (Damages) Act, 1886
DescriptionRiots which took place on Armistice day were not deemed to constitute a riot under the terms outlined in the Riot (Damages) Act, 1886 meaning the Corporation challenged the claims of tradesmen in the city in the Courts. The case of Edgar Proctor, tobacconist of Peas Hill resulted in a settlement of £50 for all damages from an initial claim of £113. The case papers consist of correspondence between the town clerk and George A Wootten, solicitor for MR Proctor, the initial claim completed by Mr Proctor, counsel's opinions, notices and court orders to produce evidence, statements of attending police and Mr Proctor, and notice of the courts claim.
