TitleLocal Government Provisional orders (no 21) bill, the County Borough of Cambridge Order
DescriptionFollowing the expansion of the Borough in 1911 the population of Cambridge increased to over 50,000 inhabitants, a key requirement for an application by Municipal Boroughs to apply for County Borough Status. The petition by the Corporation outlines the three determining factors in their case for an application for County Borough status: the contributions levied on the Borough by the County had increased, and were likely to continue to increase so long as the Borough remained in any way under the jurisdiction of the County; to obtain sole control of the Education in the Borough; and the population, rateable value, and area entitles the application. The main objective in applying for County Borough status was financial independence from the County in the form of responsibility for their own roads, bridges and secondary education provision. The objections by the County to the application were also financial as losing contributions from the main Urban centre of the County would increase the financial burden on the rest of the County significantly. The series comprises representations and supporting evidence of other Borough's applying for County Borough status and proceedings of Local and Government enquiries; reports of the Municipal Corporations Association; copies of legal briefs and evidence in the form of correspondence, newspaper articles, statements of proof; notes for the cross examination of County Council witnesses, and maps; publicity explaining the implications in favour of the application as booklets, public notices, and newspaper articles; and the report of proceedings of the Cambridge Local Government Enquiry in Dec 1912.
