Description | This series of papers relate to the Cambridge Improvement Commissioners and the Corporation's opposition to the Great Eastern Railway's 1885 and 1887 bills. The Corporation's 1885 opposition relates in principle to the development of the Hills Road Bridge as it will interfere with access to land purchased for the purpose of a new Cattle Market in the town. The Commissioners objections relate to the capacity of a longer but not wider bridge over the railway at Hills Road to accommodate increased traffic and safety concerns regarding the level crossing on Mill Road, requiring a carriage bridge to be constructed. The Commissioners objections to the 1887 bill relate to the liability to share the costs of purchase of extra land for the diversion and construction of the bridge over Mill Road. The Corporation's objections relate to the compulsory purchase of land at Coldham's Common used for the recreation of the working class in the vicinity as well as their liability to costs for the construction of a bridge over Mill Road. The series consists of copies of the bills; plans of sections of the railway; minutes of the joint parliamentary committees; copies of petitions, opinions of counsels, briefs to support the petitioners case and supporting papers, and minutes of proceedings and evidence presented to the parliamentary select committee. |
