Title"Case for Counsel [relating to] Removal of Denver Sluice
DescriptionLarge bundle of legal papers concerning Denver Sluice. Cornelius Vermuyden's original [1651] sluice and dam at Denver had been extremely unpopular as it disrupted the navigation and caused the river below to silt up. It blew up in 1713, and two distinct factions emerged - those who wanted the sluice rebuilt and those who believed the absence of the sluice improved the drainage in the Middle and South Levels. This case came at around the same time as Charles Labelye was submitting designs for a new sluice. The new sluice was eventually completed in 1750.
