Title James Stevens v. George Stevens
DescriptionPapers in case heard at Norfolk Assizes in March 1838 between James Stevens,waterman, and George Stevens. James Stevens was proceeding through the sluice from Littleport to Lynn with lighters loaded with £500-worth of wheat, property of William Coote of St Ives, when George Stevens, who had been sluice keeper at Denver Sluice for 16 years, allowed the doors to close, hitting a lighter, causing damage and the complete loss of the cargo. Papers include a coloured drawing of the sluice (2 copies), and witness statements by Nathan Black, Samuel Bowker, William Hopkin, Thomas Marsh, John Dyson, Thomas Dyson, Joseph Little, William Dawson, Thomas Ward, James Ward, Diss Sindall, Joseph Black, Joseph Harrison, Thomas Cock. Three sub-bundles include drafts and legal letters in the case, empanelling a jury, etc.
