TitleWestern family
DescriptionThomas Western (1623-1707) prospered after the Restoration (1660), first in grocery and as a timber supplier for the surge in ship-building, then as iron founder and iron monger. In 1690 most of the Abington Estate was mortgaged to him by John Bennet. Western took possession in 1697 and on his death in 1707 he left his Abington interest to his third son Maximillian (1660-1720). Maximillian foreclosed in 1709 and died in 1720 after which the estate remained in Chancery for many years. Finally, Maximillian's son Thomas (1694-1754) bought out the interest of the Bennet heirs-at-law in the Abington properties mortgaged to others and passed on both manors to his eldest son Thomas (died 1781). His heir was the Revd Charles Western who in about 1784 sold the estate to James Pierson (a London merchant) who in his turn sold to John Mortlock in 1800.
