TitleRecords of the Chief Medical Officer
DescriptionAfter Varrier-Jones' death the position of Medical Director was given to the very eminent chest physician R.R. Trail. The post was essentially an honorary one, however, and additionally he had acquired wartime duties to the R.A.F. with the position of Air Commodore, from which he was not released until 1945, so he had even less clinical involvement with the Settlement than his predecessor, who had long delegated most day-to-day matters to Dr. L. B. Stott. With the commencement of the Second World War however, Papworth had effectively lost Stott too, as he answered the call to active service. In his place Dr Donald MacCallum, Medical Officer at Enham, was drafted in to temporarily take his place, with the title of Chief Medical Officer.
