Title | High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire (1547) |
Epithet | MP, of Conington |
Activity | A sizeable landholder in Huntingdonshire, the first of his branch of the family to truly be one of the most powerful men in the county. He administered large estates and seemingly worked hard to expand his lands. He served in a variety of capacities in local government, including as JP for most of his life and representing the county in Parliament twice. His position waxed and waned as a result of the religious turmoil of the day, as an avowed Catholic he benefitted in the reign of Mary I but under Elizabeth I was named a "hinderer of religion" in 1564. Despite this, the wealth of his lands meant he retained his role as JP. |
