TitleHead and shoulders portrait of the Prince of Wales in army uniform.
DescriptionThe Prince served on the Italian Front from 1917 (when British and French reinforcements were sent to Italy to aid the Italian army) to early 1918. He returned again from April-August of that year, and then for part of September 1918. In this image the Prince is wearing a sun helmet. His letters home to Mrs Freda Dudley Ward [see "Letters from a Prince" ed. by Rupert Godfrey], contain the following,"The only thing of interest I have done today is to buy a sun helmet from the Ordnance stores; I actually found one to fit me & I long to wear it, though I suppose the sun isn't quite hot enough yet!!" [letter 15th May 1918 from G.H.Q. British Forces, Italy].
