TitleA demonstration of a "Pye Teleceiver"
DescriptionThis photograph, taken by Ernest Whitney, appeared in the Hunts Post of the 10th February 1938 - "Looking to the Future. A picture taken last week at Messrs Osman and Co.'s shop, Huntingdon, during one of the many visits paid by interested people to see and listen to the first television set in the town". The previous week's Hunts Post (27 January 1938) reported that the first television set in Huntingdon, and what was believed to be the first in the county, had been installed in Messrs. Osman and Co's shop. "The set, a Pye telereceiver, has been installed purely for experimental purposes. Few, if any, sets have been tried out at so great a distance (50 miles) from Alexandra Park, London, where television transmissions are radiated.... the experiments so far have been quite successful and have far exceeded expectations......A Post representative who was privileged to view the set on Tuesday evening found the reception excellent. There was considerable interference at times from traffic passing the shop, and no doubt the quality of the sound reproduction was greatly affected by the magnetic storm which accompanied the Aurora Borealis. The receiver, which is priced at only £43, stands about four feet high. The image is thrown on a screen, six inches by seven, and can be viewed easily from a sitting position".
The same edition of the newspaper reported that the sky had been lit up by "a remarkable and very beautiful appearance of the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, on Tuesday night"
