TitleGaol pictures of Sarah Aspittal and Walter Wells
Description/The Habitual Criminals Act of 1869 required a register with an accompanying photograph to be kept of all criminals held in gaols (Habitual Criminal Returns registers). Arthur Maddison was employed to photograph the prisoners in Huntingdon Gaol, and a few glass plates have survived in the WH9 series. Here we have an images of Sarah Aspittal and Walter Wells. The original glass plate has one image of each prisoner with the identifying nos. 231 and 232 written on the plate. The face of William Wells (no. 232) has been damaged on the glass plate seen here, but there is no damage on the print in the Habitual Criminal Returns register 1873-1878 (see below)

Sarah Aspittal was aged 38 on discharge from prison, was five feet tall, had brown hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion. She was born in Kimbolton, was married and was living in Godmanchester at the time of her apprehension. She was convicted at Huntingdon on the 22 July 1876 for stealing a quantity of coke, one sack and one how and sentenced to 14 days hard labour, and was to be liberated on the 4 August 1876.

Walter Wells was aged 12 on discharge from prison, was 4 feet 3.5 inches tall, had light brown hair, blue eyes and a fresh complexion. He was born in Godmanchester and living there at the time of his apprehension, was a labourer, and had a scar from a cut across his left eyebrow, also freckled about the face. He was convicted in Godmanchester on the 24 July 1876 for stealing a fishing rod, reel, net line and two straps and sentenced to 14 days hard labour and at the expiration of this to four years reformatory. He was to be liberated on the 6th August 1876 and sent to Ware Reformatory, Hertfordshire. He had previously been convicted of wilfully destroying carrots on the 21 July 1874 and sentenced to 21 days hard labour
