TitleHorse and Cart on the Frozen River Great Ouse at St Ives Bridge
DescriptionView of a horse and cart and a large crowd of townspeople standing on the frozen River Great Ouse at St Ives. The winters of 1890-1891 and 1894-1895 were very severe, and the river froze to such a thickness that even a horse and cart could be driven on to the river. The driver is reputed to be Alfred Worts, the proprietor of the Dolphin Hotel. The bridge with the three-storeyed chapel can be seen in the background. This glass plate is not dated, therefore this image could have been taken in either winter. It has been suggested that the horse and cart and onlookers are not actually standing on the river, but on frozen water on the river bank - it is an optical illusion that they are actually on the frozen river.
