TitleFinalist in an unidentified race, possibly a Mr Moneypenny
DescriptionThe original list to the Whitney collection identified this as the finishing line of the 1909 Huntingdonshire Marathon Race at Hinchingbrooke Park, Huntingdon (see WH1/405A-B) for images of the start of this race). The Hunts Marathon finished in Hinchingbrooke Park, but the buildings in the background of this image is not in Hinchingbrooke Park. The runners in the Hunts Marathon had large numbers attached to the front of their jerseys, yet here these runners have no numbers. Also there are images of the finish of the marathon in the Whitney 3 series (see WH3/2358A-D), which are very different from this image.
The number "255" is scratched on this plate, while the other two plates have the number "405" scratched on them, which corresponds to the entry for the Hunts Marathon in the Maddison & Hinde order book. Entry 255 in the order book reads "Moneypenny copy self" and is dated 1897.
It is known that a CJB Moneypenny did take part in Cambridge University athletics in the 1890s, and that a Mr Moneypenny won the mile and the half-mile races at Fettes College, Edinburgh in April 1897. The man winning this race does look like Mr Moneypenny, photographs of whom can be found on the internet. A newspaper obituary describes him as "the most-talked-of athlete in the [18]90s , Mr Charlton James Blackwell Moneypenny died suddenly at his home, 35 Albert Road, Caversham, on Tuesday, aged 79. Mr Moneypenny started his distinguished sporting career at the age of 18 years, when he was "capped" for Somerset at rugby. A few years later, as a runner for Cambridge University, he set up a world record of 14.4/5 secs for the 150 yards, which was not broken until 1912." He must have had connections with Huntingdon, as an article in the Grantham Journal of the 27th February 1897 reported that Mr CJB Moneypenny played golf for Huntingdon at a match held at Belton Park on the 25th February. Belton Park won.
