TitleThe Mayor of Godmanchester, Alderman James reading the proclamation of the royal accession
DescriptionThe proclamation of a new king or queen's reign by the Borough of Godmanchester traditionally took place on the middle of the river bridge between Huntingdon and Godmanchester. However, the proclamation was also read outside the Town Hall, as can be seen in this image. See also WH9/79C for an image of the Mayor leaving the bridge after reading the proclamation there. This may be the accession of King Edward VIII in January 1936, or of his brother King George VI in December 1936.
Compare with WH3/2400A-C, which are images of the Godmanchester Mayor Aubrey Markham proclaiming the accession of King George V in 1910.
