TitleSkaters on the river, Huntingdon
DescriptionA view of skaters on the frozen River Great Ouse, with the river bridge in the background. The railway bridge can just be seen in the distance, through the arches of the road bridge. The Hunts Post of the 1 February 1940 carried a similar photograph of skaters on the river. The photograph had been taken on the 20th January, and it was reported that the river was frozen for miles, and there was skating in all parts of the district. It was also estimated that on one moonlit evening three hundred skaters were gliding near the bridge. It was the "first time in forty five years skating was held on the Ouse. Some may remember the last time - 1895- when an ox was roasted on the ice, and when a carnival dance was held between the bridges at Huntingdon."
The Hunts Post of the 26th December 1940 carried the same photograph in their montage of end of year photographs, captioned "During the coldest winter for 125 years skating was general on the Ouse, and the picture above shows the scene at Huntingdon Bridge on January 20th....the thaw brought extensive floods all over the district..."
