TitleCambridge All Saints Parish Church
DescriptionThis parish was usually called 'All Saints in the Jewry' or 'by the Hospital' to distinguish it from 'All Saints by the Castle', united with St. Giles in 1365 after it had been depopulated by the Black Death. All Saints Jewry formerly stood on St. John's Street and first appears in the eleventh century when it was given to the monks of St. Albans while Paul was Abbot (1077 - 1093). In 1180 the advowson was given by one Sturmi of Cambridge to St. Radegund's Nunnery from whom it descended to Jesus College. About 1250 the parish of St. Radegund's was created out of this parish, and only formally re-united with it in 1857. The famous guild of All Saints was attached to this church and its statutes, dated 1473, provided for 30 masses to be said for each deceased member and 4d. per week for poor and aged bretheren. The old church described by Cooper as an 'unpretentious structure' was mainly late Perpendicular in style with clerestory dormers as had the old church of St. Andrew the Great. The west tower was carried by an archway over the pavement. The chancel was built by Jesus College in 1726 of brick, as Cooper scathingly remarked 'in the miserable style which too generally prevailed at that period'. The nave had four central arches and a fine double hammer-beam roof with pierced panels. The latter was transferred to the new church at Wendy in 1865 but, unfortunately, this church has since been demolished and the roof was last heard of in a builders yard. The site of the old church, demolished 1865, is now a memorial garden. The new church was erected in Jesus Lane opposite the entrance to Jesus College. It was designed by George Frederick Bodley and decorated by William Morris. Many furnishings of the mediaeval church were transferred to the new building, uncluding the font, monuments, bells (including one of fourteenth and two of the seventeenth centuries) and plate. The parish was united with that of Holy Sepulchre on 22 July 1973. The church was subsequently declared redundant and is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust (formerly the Redundant Churches Fund).
