Notes made by volunteers on the contents of this volume:

January. Appointment of new trustees at Kimbolton Grammar School. Thomas Clarke committed on remand for stealing from Ibbs of St Neots.

February. Shooting at Brampton Wood. Parliament and an excellent speech by Lord Derby. Hears that the Queen "detests" the Prince of Wales and mentions the disgrace the Prince is thought to have brought upon the royal family. Light Horse Volunteer drills and inspections.

March to April. Limited reporting. Illness.

May. House of Lords. Great Exhibition and introduction to Bessemer, with whom he discussed the steel process. Seeking an adjutant for the Light Horse Volunteers, Major Falconer suggested.

June. Epsom Derby.

July. Offer to buy an estate at Leighton. Duchess Louise away. Entertained the Duke of Cambridge and attended the Goodwood Races.

August. Visit to London with Prince Edward and the Duke of Cambridge. Daughter born and Louise ill.

September - October. Scotland. Returned via Chillingham and Middleton for the shooting. Bad inspection of the Light Horse Volunteers.

November. Great Exhibition.

December. Hunting and shooting. Visited Louise in Liverpool.
