TitleOriginal Catalogue: M37
DescriptionRecords relating to Kelvedon and other estates in Essex. Most of the items in this series were originally numbered M37/1 but have, at various times, had alternative references beginning M37A, M37B, M37/15 and DDMA5.

Note on the history of this part of the catalogue:

These records were evidently divided within a few years of deposit between 2 boxes (numbered originally 37 and 37a but 37a and 37b when transferred to new boxes by Dickinson c.1962-68), the second for records which were deemed damaged beyond description. The contents of the first box were apparently listed by G.H.Findlay assisted by J.A.Reftis in 1954. Later in 1954 Edward Miller of St. John's College, Cambridge, a member of the Muniments Sub-committee, made fuller notes on some rolls. Subsequently these rolls were lent to him to write a report for the committee. For this report, received in 1957, the records in box 37 (subsequently 37A) weer completely reorganised, and Mr. Miller's list forms the basis of the present catalogue of bundles 1-6. Many are in bad condition, some unfit for use. In 1964 they were loaned to the Essex Record Office for microfilming. The contents of the second box were not examined by Findlay. They are in poor condition, though some no worse than those in the first. They are in poor condition, though some no worse than those in the first. They have been added three documents transferred by Dickinson from 'a box unlisted' (now M37/7/3, M37/8/1 and M37/8/4) and one account roll (M37/7/1) which has been passed to the County Librarian in 1954 when it was intended to make trial photostats for Essex Record office on the library's machine and was not returned until 23 March 1988. These latter records are in fair condition, the last mentioned having obviously been chosen as a good example. The records include several other Estate records associated with these Essex properties and other records of estates connected at a later date, including an account roll for Knowle (Warwicks.) of 1371-72. There is also one complete stray-a Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire sheriff's quietus, 1684 (M37/9/2A-B), which was obviously mistaken from its external appearance for a medieval manorial record. It has been left here for the time being. Other Kelvedon estate records, including some manorial documents can be found elsewhere in the collection, including M3-4, 21-22, 24, 26, 30, 52, 58, 62. These include a court roll for 1610 (M24A/10)
