TitleLetters to John Smith of Drapers Hall, London, solicitor, regarding the administration of the estates of the late Sir Robert Bernard
DescriptionAddressed to Smith as trustee and executor under Bernard's will. Includes correspondence from: Robert Stafford, Huntingdon; George Maxwell, Peterborough; Samuel Whitbread, Bedford; Owen Fann, Huntingdon; Francis Silwell, London; William Smith, Longthorpe nr. Peterborough; Richard Stavers, Thundersley [Essex]; Thomas Stere, Bedford; Lord Sandwich, Hinchingbrooke (re. Manor of Brampton); Jane Silversides, Hadleigh [Essex]; Mr Speed, London; Stanhope Pedley, London; John Park, St Neots; H. Sewell.

Many of the letters relate to an annuity settled on Bernard's nephew, Robert Bernard Sparrow, and the refusal of Sir Robert Sparrow of Worlingham [Suffolk] to allow his son access to the funds. There are several letters from Mary Sparrow appealing for help on her son's behalf and accusing her [estranged?] husband of with-holding the money in order to keep their son in his power. One letter asks Smith to mediate with Sparrow to arrange a last meeting with her son before his departure for the continent on an educational tour; another asks Smith to "throw cold water" on Sparrow's plan to enlist their son in the army.

There is one letter to Sir Robert Bernard from Smith concerning Mr Drummond Smith's wish to purchase some ground (1788).
